Picture this: You’ve left behind all that is familiar to you and find yourself in Mexico’s breathtaking landscapes, delicious food, and rich culture full of history and color. Yet, here you are, in the quiet of your new Mexican home, facing the unexpected reality of life abroad. This isn’t the Mexico you’ve read so much about in the tourist guides and blogs; this is your experience. And frankly, it’s different.
In “What the Mexpat”, an anthropologist and immigrant from the Netherlands, who has been living in Mexico for a decade now, chronicles the rarely spoken truths of settling into Mexican society. It unravels a journey through the unforeseen with comical and poignant moments that shape the experience of a Mexpat. From the daunting initial steps in a society that is not your own all the way through fully integrating into Mexican culture and society, the author navigates the complexities of life in Mexico with raw honesty.
Some of you might be experiencing this too. I invite you to walk the path of stepping out to the streets of Mexico, not as a tourist, but as a resident. I tempt you to savor the sweet victory of belonging. It’s not just about acclimation, but about transformation. This narrative is a companion for anyone who has found themselves trying to understand a different culture. It doesn’t just share experiences – it offers a guiding hand. If your goal is to make a home in Mexico, “What the Mexpat” promises to be your beacon through this overwhelming journey.
Embrace your new reality and discover Mexico beyond the surface.

What the Mexpat a great book about moving to and living in Mexico! I love how the author included so many strange little things about Mexican culture that people don’t think to tell you (like how “ahorita” can mean “in a little bit” or “never”)! I think it’s a must-read for anyone considering a move to Mexico, or who has recently moved there. Even if you’ve been there for years, it’s entertaining – there’s so many places where I laughed while reading and said “oh my god she’s right!”

Whether you are moving to, or living in, or just interested in living in Mexico, What the Mexpat is a great read. Debbie’s writing is easy to read despite the fact that she is an anthropologist. Her Dutch background and roots, the choices she made and the experiences she went through, make this book pleasant, interesting and even self-reflecting on your own life and choices! In short: I recommend this book and it is still available at Amazon!
